Thompson's Bus

Song List - Home

I was a toddler during WW2, and I lived in my grandmother's hotel at Mangamahu. I used to dive under Grandma's kitchen table when John Polson flew low overhead in a Kittihawk. Uncle Thomps lived up on the hill opposite us. He kept his bus in an old shed behind the hotel. I traveled on his bus when I was little. Sometimes a couple of scrub-cutters were on the bus too. This song is their journey home after a day out at the Wanganui Race Course.

Chorus
(Bouncy rhythmic strum)
C
Never mind the potholes
  F C
 never mind the dust
       F C
We're off to Mangamahu
        G C
In the back of Thompson's bus (sing twice)

    C
"Well we nearly struck the double"
        F C
Wattie Pairman said to me
       F C
As we headed for the depot
        D7 G7
Just behind the D.I.C.
           C
The town clock started striking
	       F C
But we made it with a rush
       F C
And I gave a shout as we started out
    G7 C F C G7 C
In Tommy Thompson's bus.

There were cream-cans with our luggage
Loaves of bread behind our seat,
On Durie Hill we stopped to fill
An apple box with meat.
The school kids perched on mail bags
And the 'Chronicles' -what a crush!
At Fordell Store a whole lot more
Got crammed in Thompson's bus.

Chorus twice

"See the kids down in the river
They're all swimming in the buff!
We'll join them if the road gives way
On this old papa bluff
When they build that bridge at Wylie's
It'll save a lot of fuss
And we can drive by Okirae
In Tommy Thompson's bus.
Yerrrrrrroooooowwwww
"Quick hit the floor! Y' hear that roar?
John Polson's in that plane!
He's banking round the poplar trees
To dive at us again.
He'll get to Mangamahu
A good hour ahead of us
But he's going to miss young Enid's kiss
In the back of Thompson's bus.

Chorus

(Slow gentle picking)
             C Am
There's Geof Morris on his Fergie
        F C
Tom Macdonald in his ute
            F C
And (old) Smithy in his Essex
           D7 G7
With that dogbox in the boot
C Am
They're yarning, smoking roll-your-owns
            C Am
While waiting in the dusk
         F C Am
For the bread and news and friendship-that...
        G7 C F C Am G7 C
...we bring in Thompson's bus.

Grab your gear and slasher, Wattie
Come across to Archers' pub
Before we head up-river
to that block of old-man scrub
With a Tui beer together
The shout is on the boss
And we'll bid good cheer to the kind folk here
who rode in Thompson's bus
Yes I bid good cheer to you kind folk here at (this concert...)
who rode in Thompson's bus

Chorus (slowly)
Chorus again (faster)
then (lively)
Yes we're off to Mangamahu in the back of Thompson's bus!

The Ballad Writers' Toolbox

Why in Wisconsin?

This ballad originated when I wrote a song for a country ball in the Okirae woolshed. It needed a format that would mention lots of local places and personalities.

I was surprised by its wide appeal. When I did some concerts in Wisconsin USA in 1991, it was by far my most requested song.

Why do you think this Mangamahu song was so popular in Wisconsin ?
