WAIATA * AROHA
Kotahi Kapua
       1979

Composed by early members of Te Ataarangi in honour of Kāterina Mataira and the kaupapa of Te Ataarangi. It describes how a single person or kaupapa can have a great impact, just like a single raincloud on parched crops.

Kotahi kapua ki te rangi
He marangai ki te whenua
Ki te whenua.

Kotahi kapua ki te rangi
He marangai ki te whenua
Ki te whenua

Kua whiti te rā
Ki tua o Kahurangi
Kia kore koe e ngaro1
Taku reo rangatira.

Just one cloud in the sky can give
a lifegiving shower of rain on the land,
on the land.

Just one cloud in the sky can give
a lifegiving shower of rain on the land,
on the land.

The sun has shone
all over the blue sky
so that you will not be lost
my chiefly language

1. These two lines are the proverb written on the

insignia of Te Ataarangi.

Te Ataatangi

Since its beginnings in 1979, Te Ataarangi has engaged Māori communities in learning their language, customs and values in homes and on Marae.

Te Ataarangi use Caleb Gattengo's friendly cuisenaire rod method to learn the language, while interweaving it with tikanga Māori, thus opening the door to the Māori world.
