Te turangawaewae o Ngai Te Ahi
E kokoia e ara e!
I live in the bosom of
Ranginui
My thoughts go back
To ancestral settlements
I look out at the mountain that rises up
Mt
Maunganui is the fabled foundation of the ancestors
My eyes turn to Waitaia, to Te Pahou, to Poike
the sites of my grandparents.
My walk to the ancestral settlements will begin
with Ohauiti and Tongaparaoa
then to Kaitemako, to Te Pae o Tu, to Titirua
I will climb the peaks of Maungatutu,
of Otanewainuku and Puwhenua
then descend to Te Taumata, to Akeake, to Maenene
and continue onto Oropi and to Te Waoku.
The lands that were confiscated
impoverished my ancestors
my heart cries at their loss
How angry I am, how painful it is!
I will go down the Waimapu River
land at Kahotea
then fly up to Whakapoukarakia
the ancient fortified village of Tamahika
that was destroyed by fire.
Alas, alas!
I will continue my way to Poike
where stood Ranginui
a
hero, a powerful leader!
Then straight to the beach
and my journey to Te Urumingi will be complete.
I climb the orphaned Ohau
My eyes devour the sea that flows out
then I look on the other side to Ruatuna, to
Motu-o-puhi
I will stand again at my marae at Hairini
The founding place of Ngai Te Ahi.
Get organised and get going!
