FOLK * SONG
Taku Mokopuna
Manawakore Leach 1984

G Te taonga o toku ngakau
Ko D taku mokopunā e
He mokopunā korikori
Hei G aha hei aha ra?
Ko te C mea nui ko te aroha
Kaua G e patu taku mokopunā
Kia D awhi, awhi mai
taku mokopunā korikori G e.
The treasure of my heart
is my little mokopunā.
S/he's an energetic mokopunā
But what can you do, eh?
The greatest thing of all is love
so don't smack my little mokopunā.
Just keep on cuddling
my wriggly mokopunā.

The greatest thing in my heart
Is my little mokopunā
S/he's my darling mokopunā
Hei aha hei aha rā?
The greatest thing is aroha
so don't - smack my mokopunā
Just love and kiss and cuddle
with my mokopunā

Ka toro mai ona ringaringa
Ko toku mokopunā e
Hei awhi atu maku
Arohatia toku mokopunā e
Ko te mea nui ko te aroha
Kaua ra e patu toku mokopunā
Kia awhi awhi mai
toku mokopunā korikori e
Stretch out your hands
to my little mokopunā
and help her/him for me.
My mokopunā must be loved
The greatest thing of all is love
so don't smack my little mokopunā.

Just keep on cuddling
my wriggly mokopunā.

Manawakore Leach wrote this in 1984 for her mokopuna Tamahou Henare Teepa who was born prematurely at Palmerston North Hospital and was not expected to live. It was first sung publicly at Maungarongo Marae when Henrietta Maxwell and Kuini Reedy were holding a Kohanga Reo hui there.

A new word for me.
Korikori = moving. Here it obviously means always moving.
