A powhiri song This was published as a children's song, but is also ideal for adult beginners to sing at powhiri. It is an interesting and useful substitute for Ehara i te mea, He honore, and Te aroha, other easy-to-learn but overused tunes. Using the same two-line tune, you could develop briefer or longer versions, depending on your group's skills in language and harmony. Te Wheke - A Celebration of Infinite Wisdom The words of this hymn are taken from Dr Rose Pere's salutation to her readers in her book on traditional Maori learning methods, Te Wheke - A Celebration of Infinite Wisdom. Dr Pere says that just as the octopus, Te Wheke, has three hearts, the three hearts of traditional society are self-identity, proper work practices, and sharing of produce. And as the octopus moves on eight tentacles, you move though life by developing your authenticity, spirituality, respect, traditional knowledge, current knowledge, emotional sensitivity, and your ties to the physical environment and the community. A gift of love this is to the whole world an acknowledgement to the Earth Mother     Dr Rose Pere (Tuhoe, Kahungunu) Rangimarie Turuki Rose Pere, B.A., Dip Soc, L.Th., M.Phil, Litt.D. Rose's childhood was spent at Ruatahuna. She has taught young people from preschool through to university, and she has taken educationalists to far beyond those level. She has been strongly influenced by teachings that go back over 12,000 years, and has studied ancient teachings in the Americas, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Great Britain, East Asia and the South Pacific, but in between times she ensures that she sees as many people as she can in New Zealand. She is able to approach education from both a traditional Māori perspective and that of the Western world. Her book "Te Wheke-The Celebration Of Infinite Wisdom," is used in the many countries, and has been translated into Japanese and German. Rose has many university qualifications, and was awarded a Doctorate of Literature from Victoria University of Wellington in 1996.
