Toby Rikihana, assisted by George Parekowhai, compiled these recordings and song books for primary and secondary teachers. During the 1960s, 70s and 80s they recorded and transcribed 276 songs, then translated the Maori lyrics into English.
Because of the popularity of some songs, different versions were sung, and the writers sometimes had difficulty in deciding which versions should be included in the book. Sometimes the original was selected with one or two alternative words or lines included at the end of the waiata, at other times later versions were selected because of changes that the general public tended to favour.
Most of the
songs were typed out on a manual typewriter in pre-computer days and then photocopied
and ringbound. There are also some pages photocopied from other books.
and Matua Toby has never had time to re-format it. Consequently the songs, and the table of contents are in the sequence that were collected, not in alphabetical order, so I have put one at the bottom
of this webpage. ALPHABETICAL

If you are overseas, I guess you could e-mail an enquiry, and then phone, fax
or post your credit card number.
I received this e-mail from Jenny Howitt at Kohia in mid-2003.
Kohia
Teachers Centre has been selling these items for a very long time. Toby and
George Parakowhai gifted the resources to Kohia about five years ago which
is about when I started at Kohia. The books and tapes have not been updated
in the time I have been at Kohia. I believe Toby talked of updating but our
masters remain the same.
Regarding payment. Kohia can take credit card sales over the phone, postage
added
Please feel free to phone if you need further information.
