Paraire Tomoana was a prolific writer of action songs. This was one of his first compositions, sung as the theme song at a concert held in the Wellington Town Hall in September 1915, to farewell the Second Maori Contingent. It became a favorite during World War I.

I runga o ngā puke
Ka p
ā mai toa reo;
Hau maiangi hei kawe mai.
He reo aroha p
ātai ana mai.
"He aha tau e, pirangi nei?"
Up on the hills
Your voice reaches me
The gentle breeze wafts it forth
A voice of love asks,
"What do you desire?"

Chorus
Kia awhi kau atu
Ki tō tinana i ngaro,
E ngaro nei i au
i ēnei ra
Ko t
ōu aroha,
Ko t
ōku aroha,
Ka mutu pea!
Aue! Te tau!

To embrace and
caress
your body, now lost,
lost to me
these many days.
Your love,
My love,
How wonderful!

Oh yes, my darling!
Waiho mai e tama
O kupu oati,
I runga o nga puke
I tangi ai taua.
E haere ana koe
Ki runga o te pakanga:
Ko to reo aroha,
Karanga mai

Chorus
Left here dear boy
are your oaths

that made us weep  line 4
up on the hills.
       line  3
Now you are going
onto the battlefield,
but your loving voice
still calls to me.
