Maori Songs - Kiwi Songs - Home

This song is now used as a healing meditation by substance abuse support groups

  1. Once you stood like a Totara tree
    Gently swaying in the breeze
I hear the whispers in the air
    And I cry

  2. I feel my Tipuna everywhere
    Even next to me
    Strong and tall
    Proud and free
    But still I cry
    Strong and tall
    Proud and free
    And still I cry

  3. We knew one day that noble tree would fall
But now a new one stands
    Strong and tall
    Proud and free
    But still I cry
    Strong and tall
    Proud and free
    And still I cry

    Repeat V3 & V1

The totara tree in Tane's forest has fallen

The totara tree is the king of the forest, protecting the other trees from storm damage. This is why the following saying is quoted when a leader dies.

Ka hinga te totara i te wao nui a Tāne,
The totara tree in Tane's great forest has fallen,

engari, mate atu he tētē kura, whakaete mai he tētē kura.
however, a leader falls, and another leader thrusts his way to the front.

Language note:- A
tētē is a young shoot, and whakaete is to thrust forward, like a shoot up out of the soil. Thus a tētē kura is a red-cloaked person who thrusts himself forward to a leadership position.

Wiremu Nia Nia

Several of his songs have been recorded by Te Mokai Roopu Waiata.

Pouakani is a totara tree near Mangapeni in the
Southern Waikato. It is 12 m in circumference
and 43 m tall, with a wood volume of about 200 m3
