A soothing chant to calm a disturbed person.

Turou whakataha,
te rangi e tu iho nei,

E kanga ki te whetu,
E kanga ki te marama,
E kanga ki te ra,
E kanga ki te rangi,
E kanga ki a Papa-tu-a-Nuku,
E kanga ki a Whatitiri-matakataka,
E kanga ki a Puaorangi,
E kanga ki a Atutahi-marehua,

Turou whakataha
te rangi e tu iho nei.

Kuruki,
Kuruki o atua,
Kuruki o tapu,
Kuruki o makutu,
Kuruki o whaiwhaia,
Kuruki o kanakana,
Kuruki o raweoi,
Kuruki whakataha,

Tō upoko ’pokokohua,
Kainga reka,
Ma raro mai koe i taku tou,

Ma runga atu au i tō upoko,
’Pokokohua.

Let us push aside
the obstructive atmosphere here.

Cursing the stars
Cursing the moon
Cursing the sun
Cursing the sky
Cursing the countryside goddess
Cursing the thunder god
Cursing the lightning god
Cursing the dog-star god

Let us push aside
the obstructive atmosphere here.

"May you all drift away to me
May you drift to me o spirits
May you drift to me o inhibitions
May you drift to me o curses
May you drift to me o spells
May you hysterics drift to me
May you convulsions drift to me
May you twitching drift to me."

Your head was boiling with them
A tasty smorgasbord for me.
"Down you all go, out my bum."

Now I can get back up into your head
Your boiling head.

This is NOT a magic chant that will miraculously cure a person "possessed by the Devil." It outlines a logical psychiatric technique for treating a person with an unhinged mind. A skilled healer would have modified this chant according to the behaviour and responses of the afflicted person.

The tohunga-therapist first connects with the afflicted person using a soothing repetitive chant, and gains his rapport by identifying the details of his rage.

Then by taking control of what the afflicted one sees in his mind to be overpowering spirits, the tohunga calms him sufficiently to be able to talk rationally to him and find the source of his anger.
