In 1879 the Government commissioned John White
to compile the pre-European Māori knowledge, history and
tradition - including prayers, myths, songs, genealogies and
proverbs - that had been written down and collected for the
past 60 years. The first bi-lingual volume of The
Ancient History of the Maori was published in 1887.
You can read both the Maori and English versions at the same
time by using two windows on a big computer, or two tablets.
White's translations of the stories are good, but his
translations of the poetry need more work done on them. |
