2002 Rosalie and friends Songs for the Earth Available from Rosalie Steward $30 This CD is the home-recorded product from up the Coromandal coast of a real "rural mum singing songs to her kids to keep a positive outlook on life." She also has an interest in Native American spirituality. Technically, not a polished CD, but authentic folk music. Wild Geese Promises to Keep Available from Brendon Connor $25 Some of the songs Brendon sings are personal, and others call up NZ historical ghosts, like the miners of a now-derelict Westport coalmine ('Mist descending from a slate-gray sky'), the 1980s New Right greedies ('Rise up you men of Babel') and the boys who trained at Featherston's army camp, (Promises to keep, march on....! march on....!'), all done with Celtic moodiness created by their pipes, bouzoukis, bodhrans and Brendon's passionate singing. Carl Wyant It's All Undone. Carl Wyant was a columnist with the Whangarei Report for the past 10 years, a talented musician with an extensive knowledge of traditional music from his Californian homeland, acoustic blues with a dose of country style picking, and almost Dylanesque lyrics. He died last year, but his friends had occasionally recorded his playing, and made this CD. Roger White Riding on Silver Rails Available from [email protected] $27.50 ( CD $25 + $2.50 p & p) Mick Sibley writes: "A very good folk CD. Twelve original songs of which several should become Kiwi folk classics. Roger plays great acoustic guitar, sings like he means it, and his lyrics take you where he wants you. He tells some great tales of Destruction gully, Godwits, an old grey haired lady outside PaknSave and a train ride from New Lynn to Henderson." 2001 Peter Cape, Pat Rogers, Phil Garland, Chris Cape, Arthur Toms & John Sutherland I'm An Ordinary Joker: songs of Peter Cape Available from Steele Roberts $58 (CD & coffee table book) Peter Cape is best known for his songs which are Kiwi classics. Funny, sentimental, satirical, historical, contemporary; they nailed down our emerging Kiwi identity in a way no one had ever done before. This CD has 23 of his songs, and is accompanied by a large hardbound book of Peter Cape's life, including many family photographs, a brief autobiography, explanatory material and every one of his songs, with music, words, and chords, all lovingly compiled by Roger Steele. Tony Hillyard Hidden from the Eye of Chance Available from Tony Hillyard $20.50 ( CD $18 + $2.50 p & p) From one of Wellington's best known balladeers, a selection of traditional and contemporary English classics, all sung from the heart, and with impeccable guitar accompaniment: twelve of Tony's favourite ballads drawn from 30 years of singing in folk clubs in England and New Zealand. Most NZ folk songs in the NZ Pakeha tradition have British roots; Tony, (like other British trad singers in New Zealand, Bev Young and Debbie Gillanders), does us a great service by constantly keeping us our folk roots music alive here for us. Bev Young The Tinkerman's Daughter Traditional Celtic folk songs from our well-loved Auckand singer. The reluctant pirate, The tinkerman's daughter, Beidh aonach amarach, Vanished like the snow, The leaboy's lassie..... Julian Ward Wellington Folk Music Festival 2000 - Video Available from Julian Ward Julian Ward is a Wellington folkie and gifted video cinemaphotographer. When he made this beautiful video of the October 2000 Wellington Folk Festival at Brooklands scout camp, hidden in the ranges behind Wellington, he captured its spirit perfectly. Sample Real Video clips Phil Garland Swag O' Dreams SLC 261 Available from Kiwi Pacific International Celebrating 150 years of Canterbury Settlement. The old adage that "you must first understand the past before you can plan for the future" is well represented here, with a varied mix of N.Z. trad and original about such subjects as diverse as:- Early Settlers & Immigration - Sheep Shearing - The McKenzie Legend Protest against Damming the Rakaia River - Gold Mining - Hotel Restoration Cobb & Co Coaching - Gambling - Swaggers - Trains - Farming - Property Development. 2000 Peter Mack and Noel Rutherford Uncertain Futures (CD) Available from Noel Rutherford Palmerston North folk club stalwarts Peter Mack (uilleann pipes) and Noel Rutherford (celtic harp) both have terminal cancer, hence the album's title. But this CD of theirs is a celebration of life. Peter's own Tune for Emma-Lee, written for his daughter, is a delight, while Neil's Waitohi invoking the unending sound of the river of his childhood, affirms his belief in the continuity of life. There are also 16 traditional celtic tunes and a jazz piece. Uncle John's Band Small Town (CD) Available from Andy Bassett Andy writes from experience about living in a small town / Where the locals stand and stare As you pass through me / On the way to who knows where. Andy's songs form boldly crafted pictures of what life holds for the new-poor in New Zealand's provinces today. Read his lyrics for yourself. SHINER Kiss The Kilkenny (CD) Available from Kevin McLoughlin NZ$25 SHINER (Kevin McLoughlin, Steve Barkman, Vic MacDonald and Adrian Higgins) is a Dunedin celtic/country band named after "Shiner" Slattery, a well known identity around North Otago and South Canterbury late last century. Includes The Stable Lad and presumably, "Hooray for the Swag and the Shiner." Dave Jordan Pacific Crossings (CD) Available from Dave Jordan NZ$25 As Dave now has MS, this is all-digital from composition software to CD. It is a compilation of tunes, themes and musical pictures. Not strictly folk, but a few folk melodies are evident. 1999 Colonial Two-Step Fields of the Gum (CD) Review by Tony Ricketts: "Fields of the Gum is a beautiful CD, that includes several old 'gum' songs, as well as many others written recently by Bill and Kath, with great playing and great recording, the latter by my old friend Kerrin. 'I Only Spoke Portuguese' is, I think, the best 'traditional' folk love song since 'Buller to the Grey.' Try and get a listen to this, even buy it without listening first; you will not be disappointed." Colonial Two-Step New Zealand Tour (CD) "Bill and Kath have collected some great songs south of the gum-fields too. Together with 19th ballads like The Black Swans and The Wellerman, they have new versions of Scrub & Blackberry and Taranaki Spring, and also songs I have never heard before and fell in love with as soon as I heard them, like the T.T.Line, and Working For The Roads Board."(JA) Both CDs available from Bill & Kath Worsfold, RD3, Warkworth, NZ Celia Briar & Mary Hubble. An Phis Fluicht. (The Garden of Daisies) CBLI01, 1999. (CD) Available from Celia Briar Celtic music from a highly talented pair of local folkies. Celia is a harpist from Palmerston Nth, and Mary is a flautist from Wellington. 1998 Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard Millennium Hippies (CD) Available from Amplifier Comments by Mark Laurent: "This is a very different album to any we have done before, and we hope that people will be pleasantly surprised. The songs are quite varied, both in style and content, and bassist George Barris radically transformed the album with his exquisitely tasteful playing. There is also some beautiful celtic whistle from Duncan Davidson." Phil Tilbury Swimming the Clutha (CD) Phil's own South Island ballads. Available from Kiwi Pacific Kayte Edwards Emergenc-ee (CD) Kayte uses her wonderful deep voice to sing her urban woman's blues. Available from 9A Buckingham St, Melrose Wellington Owen Hugh Exits and Entrances (CD) A compilation of the best of Owen's songs from six earlier albums. "Owen is an itinerant Scot who turns up at NZ folk festivals singing quiet evocative songs and playing his guitar accompaniment in that exquisitely gentle "James Taylor" style. Our favourite of Owen's is 'The World Keeps On Turning,' so evocative of that old man near Levin we used to watch ploughing with his Clydesdale horses. Alas, it is not on this CD."(JA) Phone 0116-223-0318 in the UK, (or try Madness Music). Phil Garland A Sense of Place (CD and cassette) 12 of Phil's own new songs Available from Kiwi Pacific, SLC 250 Mike Harding Past to the Present (CD) NZ regional songs from North to South (Posthole Song, Hills Of Coromandal, Up the Mangapapa,

Another fine album of Celtic songs by our expatriate Wellingtonian in Israel to match her gold-medal-winning Celtic Cradle Genus Focus Look At The Sky (cass) Sarita & Camilla Murdoch, and Shelly Marie Lively unaccompanied 3-part harmony, from trad to Dylan. Also the Fishfinger song and Kath Tait's Travellers in Your Eyes Available from the Hamilton Acoustic Music Club, PO Box 1323, Hamilton, NZ Hamilton County Bluegrass Band Since 1993, the original members of this 1960s band have occasionally got back together to perform. Obtaining NZ Folk Records in 2002

From Old Folkies
Most of these records were made in small quantities and sold at folk festivals or at folk club concerts by touring singer-songwriters. So go to a folk club night or folk festival and ask around. You could ask if you might borrow a particular record.

Or visit them and listen to it. Or perhaps they will make a tape copy of an old out-of-stock record. Or they will sing the song for you and you can record them live. Take a tape recorder to the next folk festival.

78s and 45s
For really old recordings, watch out at garage sales and 2nd-hand shops for 78rpm records under the TANZA (To Assist New Zealand Artists) or His Master's Voice labels, with titles like Blue Smoke, Lonely Lonely Blues...You can find 45s from the 60s too, mostly comedy-folk in style like Rod Derrett's Rugby, Racing and Beer

Cityfolk
Those dedicated Hastings folk-heroes, Trevor Ruffell and Keith Gosney, produced some wonderful LPs in the 1980s. But all have been disposed of. Watch out in 2nd hand shops especially for Paths, and The Best Is Yet To Come.

I guess Trevor still has the master tapes. Hopefully, somebody will help him to re-release some of these treasures as CDs one day. You can reach him at [email protected]. Or write to; PO Box 919, Hastings, New Zealand

Kiwi Pacific
An offshoot of publishers AH & AW Reed, they have produced many records under the various Kiwi labels (45s, LPs, cassettes) of Brit/USA folk-style songs written by New Zealanders with ethnic Anglo-saxon roots. The 45s are in 2nd-hand shops, and some records made from the 1960s onwards are still available from them mainly in cassette form. They have produced many records by Phil Garland, mainly of the old rural and seafaring ways, and sung in the bush-band style. They also sell records of songs in other NZ ethnic traditions.
